How to Clean Up Downloads Folder Automatically in Windows 10.
The Downloads folder is a folder that exists for each user profile in Windows 10. It is also set as the default download location for all modern web browsers. If you don’t take care of it regularly, its content will quickly fill your disk space.
Windows 10 includes the Storage sense feature that can automatically clean up that download folder.
What is Storage Sense
Storage Sense is a nice, modern addition to Disk Cleanup. It allows you to maintain certain folders by preventing them from getting too large and clean them up automatically. The Storage Sense feature can be found in Settings, under System -> Storage.
Storage Sense can be used to remove Windows upgrade log files, system-created Windows Error Reporting Files, Windows Defender Antivirus temporary files, Thumbnails, Temporary Internet Files, Device driver packages, DirectX Shader Cache, Downloaded Program Files, Delivery Optimization Files, old System log files, System error memory dump files and minidumps, temporary Windows update files, and more.
Storage Sense can automatically clean some of the user’s files to free up disk space. By default, Storage Sense is automatically turned on when the machine runs into low disk space and is set to run whenever the machine runs into storage pressure.
Clean Up Downloads Folder Automatically in Windows 10
- Open the Settings app.
- Navigate to System > Storage
- Under Storage, change the switch option under from off to on.
- Click on the Configure Storage Sense link.
- Enable the Automatic User Content Cleanup option on the ‘Configure Storage Sense’ page.
- Select a value of your choice for the Delete files in my Downloads folder that haven’t been opened for.
You can set it to run every
- 1 day
- 14 days
- 30 days
- 60 days
Also you can click the Run Storage Sense button to clean up all the selected options with the Storage Sense.
